Let’s see, what’s going on tomorrow?
- The Beatles: Rock Band release date
- 9 movie release
- Apple Rock and Roll Event
- Nerf announces new Blaster
It seems that everybody is trying to cash in on the pseudo significance of the odd date but despite it all, the most important event to me won’t be televised for the world to see and cannot be purchased at any price.
But you may see a picture or two.
Tomorrow, on 09-09-09, our little boy will begin his 13-year educational journey as he attends his first day of kindergarten. While The Kid is definitely excited to get his journey going, his parents see it as a bittersweet moment in their lives. And if you’re not a parent, you just won’t understand.
It all seems surreal. I mean, wasn’t it just a few days ago when the nurse handed him to me minutes after he was delivered and I began to cry uncontrollably? Wasn’t it last month when he said his first word? It seems like a month ago when he took his first steps and only a year since he began to form sentences like a child beyond his capacity.
No, it’s been over 5 years since that little boy came into our lives and enriched them with his wit and wisdom, his intelligence, his humor, his devious smile and lack of coordination when it comes to sports.
His future begins tomorrow, a future which, at this point in our existence, is uncertain and downright scary. But like all of his classmates, he enters kindergarten with childlike sense of wonder, eternal optimism, a clean slate, and the possibility of making this world a brighter and even better place for his children and grandchildren. (As of now, he still wants to be a firefighter.)
My son, you may only be five years old, but your Mommy and Daddy are proud of you. It’s your time to shine and show the world what you’re truly made of, and how Mommy and Daddy raised you to have the common sense and decency that many adults lack.
The world is yours beginning tomorrow. No matter what you choose to do, we are behind you 100 percent.
Now go get ‘em, tiger.

I think there were more parents crying than students 🙂

My daughter is about to turn three…in about two weeks..and already, because she seems to be showing signs of being ready to be with other kids in such an environment, i’ve registered her for pre-school for next year. 😦 It’s already hard seeing her grow up, become less dependent (It’s a good thing, obviously, but she is my little snuggybear, yes she is, yes she is…sigh), much less allowing myself to trust other people to be her custodians and nurturers of her emotional and intellectual well-being. Most people intend well, but I must admit there is a great deal of selfishness with being a parent.
Gotta let go….some…sometime, eventually.

It’s definitely amazing to see how the grow from being so dependent on us to simply walking away in favor of playing with their friends. You think they’re going to be that little person forever and then there’s that one day–and you’ll see it soon–when that’s just not the case anymore. I spent the days before his first day of school watching some old video clips of him: my babbling, waddling, hardly recognizable baby was so small. And now here we are, sending him off to school. Bittersweet but necessary…
Sounds like your daughter will be fine. Hang in there 🙂
