Unemployed, Day 1

Today is April Fool’s Day and being that, um, certain things happened yesterday, I’m not feeling jovial enough to post a bogus entry for today. (Last year’s post is still popular and getting hits.) I did have something in mind but that would have required rerouting my domain to another page and all sorts of other crap and frankly, I was up to doing until yesterday’s news.

And if I had gone through with it, here’s what you would have seen here at Holographic Meatloaf. Oh well.

At any rate, it’s time to head on over to Local Big Box Department Store and buy some interview clothes since, well, my old ones are really baggy now. I’ve got a few leads and have some friends sending me some resources and I’m thankful for all of it. I also bought a lotto ticket yesterday. Yeah, that’ll happen. I also (finally) posted an online version of my resume which you can see here.

I’ve also taken a few steps in cutting back. First, I canceled my pre-order of Depeche Mode’s Sounds of the Universe box set. There’s just no sense in buying something like that right now and quite honestly, I’ve heard the album and I’m not impressed. And that’s coming from a Depeche Mode fan of many, many years. Since I canceled the order, I get the amount I had on my Target gift card credited back. That’s about $50 for stuff we need.

Second, with my final regular paycheck, we went to Costco last night to stock up on food so we don’t starve ourselves. Our fridge is full–for now, at least. I’m also entitled to another 6 weeks of severance pay which should be coming once my former employer completes their end of the paperwork.

Third, I used my last $10 Best Buy Rewards Certificate to buy a few reams of paper so that I can print out oodles of resumes for a job fair in Long Beach next week. This is why I had to buy new clothes today. I will also be applying at a few places today including, yes, Disneyland. Rest? What’s that?

*checks e-mail*

Looks like someone found my resume on CareerBuilder. Better respond.

See ya!

  1. I am so sorry that you got laid off. I am not going to hit you with a slew of platitudes that you’ve probably already heard. My friend, Linda, has been out of work for a month and a half now so I know how tough it can be out there. You’re a smart guy and I have faith in you. (Not that me having faith in you will get you a job or anything like that.)

    1. Thanks, man. I appreciate your words and honesty.

I’m taking it pretty well and was even joking with HR during my exit interview. It wasn’t entirely unexpected so I’m making the most of it.

Things will happen I’m sure. Until then, I gotta stay busy looking.
